Duitama
The statue of the Bogota bullfighter César Rincón, made by the sculptor Argemiro Díaz Moreno and located since February 2003 in Duitama, Boyacá, has been removed. This monument, which had become one of the symbols of the bullring of the city and the department, was removed by the Municipal administrationgenerating a notable controversy.
José Luis Bohórquez, mayor of Duitama, explained that the sculpture will be restored and relocated around the “Plaza de todos”. Bohórquez emphasized that the objective is not to destroy the sculpture, but to move it so that the current space, intended to celebrate life, theater, sports and peasant spaces, is consistent with the purpose of the Anti-bullfighting Lawwhich only requires presidential sanction.
“We want to clarify that we are not destroying the sculpture, but rather removing it to adapt the space to its new purpose. We hope that on the sides of the square there will be a memory space where this monument can be installed and its history explained to new generations. We respect the opinions of those who value this work, but the law prohibits bullfighting and everything changes over time. “We want to be consistent with this new era of celebrating life,” declared Mayor Bohórquez.
The sculpture of the Colombian bullfighter César Rincón, designed by the North Antander sculptor Argemiro Díaz Moreno, was installed on February 15, 2003 and, after 21 years in its original location, has been removed. Later, the sculptor Díaz Moreno expressed on his social networks: “History will say that we were part of this work of art.”
