On April 23, 2000, Big Brother was broadcast for the first time in Spain, a reality show in which several contestants locked themselves in a special house to share experiences for months. It was the first reality television program to be broadcast in Spain and, after the success of the first edition, which was the audience leader every week, it continued for years and left a large number of contestants who assaulted the televisions and homes of the Spanish people. both on GH and in other Telecinco programs.

Big Brother 2 featured the participation of Carlos Navarro, a young man from Barcelona born on November 18, 1976 who was popularly known as ‘El Yoyas’ and who was disciplinaryly expelled from the house at Gala 5 for having violent behavior with his companion and ex-partner Fayna Bethencourt.

That GH2 premiered on March 18, 2001 and ended on June 27, 2001, and for 101 days it captured the attention of Spain. Initially, 12 contestants coexisted, but when Yoyas was expelled by decision of the program management, he was replaced by a reserve.

The winner was Sabrina Mahia Malaga promoter, who won the briefcase with 20 million pesetas and who married another contestant, Ángel Tous, from whom she separated 12 years later and with a child in common. The rest of the contestants, with the profession they had at the time of entering the house, were the following:

Fran Garcia (Badajoz), rancher, who was a finalist.

Mari Arrabal (Cádiz), door-to-door saleswoman and waitress. Third.

Angel Tous (Alicante), Criminology student.

Kaiet Lopez (Vizcaya), businessman.

Alonso Jimenez (Granada), cabotage skipper.

Eva Paz (Balearic Islands), waitress.

Emilio Lozano (Madrid), dependent.

Karola Alonso (La Rioja), teleoperator.

Roberto Cendrero (Madrid), businessman

Fayna Bethencourt (Las Palmas), tour guide. She was the second expelled.

Carlos Navarro (Barcelona), unemployed pastry chef

Marta Lopez (Zamora), hotelier. It was the first expulsion and she was only in the house for 10 days. Upon leaving it, she became one of its best-known faces, participating in all types of Telecinco programs, from Crónicas Marcianas to Sálvame, through MyHyV and even being the cover of Interviú.

Some of them had a relationship, like Alonso and Mari (their relationship was brief), Eva and Emilio (who got married at home and also outside, although after two years their love ended) or Sabrina and Ángel, who also got married, had a child and later separated.

What happened to Carlos Navarro and his problems with Justice

Carlos Navarro suffered a disciplinary expulsion for the violent behavior he had with Fayna in the Big Brother house, but he took advantage of the media pull and became a very popular character as a collaborator of Crónicas marcianas between 2001 and 2004.

Between 2008 and 2011 he regularly collaborated on Jordi Évole’s Salvados program with the Apatruyoyando section and obtained work on other television and radio programs and even published books of poetry and a song. Despite what happened with Fayna at home, they both stayed together, opened a nightclub in Barcelona called ‘La Taberna del Yoyas’ and shared a life together for years.

From television to politics

Carlos participated in Ciudadanos electoral rallies between 2010 and 2012 and in 2015 he ran for mayor of Vilanova del Camí for the DECIDE party (Law, Citizenship and Democracy), becoming a councilor. Later he continued to be involved in politics in minority parties.

On December 11, 2020, he was sentenced by the Criminal Court number 5 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to 6 years in prison for being the author of 7 crimes of abuse, injuries, threats and humiliation, 6 of them against his ex-wife Fayna Bethencourt and their two children together, both minors, and another crime against Fayna’s new partner. The Prosecutor’s Office had requested 8 years in prison for him and 10 years of loss of parental authority over his children.

Months later, on April 20, 2021, the second section of the Las Palmas Provincial Court ratified the prison sentence under the same terms. In November 2022, the Criminal Court number 5 of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ordered his search and capture after neglecting the requirement to voluntarily enter prison in compliance with a sentence of seven crimes of abuse, injuries, threats and humiliation against his ex-wife, his children and his ex-wife’s partner.

On June 26, 2024, Carlos Navarro was arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra, in a house in the Barcelona region of L’Anoia, where he was permanently hidden and took many self-protection measures to avoid being located.
