- CONMEBOL’s climate-smart garden has been recognised by Football For The Goals for its contribution to the sustainable development that the institution promotes for positive change in the environment.
- Since 2022, the South American Football Confederation has been a member of Football For The Goals (FFTG), an initiative of the United Nations (UN).
As part of its sustainable development objective, CONMEBOL promotes the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems with the creation of a climate-smart garden, at its headquarters in Luque – Paraguay, which has been valued by FFTG, for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. As part of FFTG’s communication to its subscribers, they highlight CONMEBOL’s climate-smart garden for representing one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which seeks to conserve the life of terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, it aims to protect and restore terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, fight desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt the loss of biodiversity.
The climate-smart garden not only seeks to beautify the surroundings of the CONMEBOL headquarters, but also preserves local biodiversity, sustainable management of natural resources and mitigation of the effects of climate change. The choice of native species and the promotion of sustainable gardening practices are an integral part of this project, which in the long term aims to convert the main building into an example of an urban forest, capable of housing wildlife, increasing air quality and helping to regulate local temperature.
The recognition by FFTG underlines the positive impact that this initiative has in the environmental field and how sport, through concrete actions like this, can lead significant efforts towards a more sustainable future.
