London sword attack kills child, wounds four others

A 13-year-old boy was confirmed dead and four other people injured after a man brandishing a sword attacked pedestrians and police officers in Hainault, east London, on Tuesday.

“He (the boy) was taken to hospital after being stabbed and sadly died shortly afterwards,” said Stuart Bell, chief superintendent of the Metropolitan Police. The other four people hospitalized are two police officers and two bystanders.

The suspect, 36 years old, was arrested. The incident does not appear to be related to terrorism, according to police.

Sadiq Khan, mayor of London, declared himself “absolutely devastated” by the attack, while British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that “such violence has no place on our streets.”
