The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvacalled this Friday at the G7 summit for the imposition of a global tax on the super-rich, to help combat inequalities.

The Brazilian president, who is participating in the summit as a guest, stressed that the concentration of wealth in a few hands represents “a risk for democracy.”

“It’s time for the super-rich to pay their fair share of taxes. This excessive concentration of power and income represents a risk for democracy,” said Lula, according to a statement released by the Brazilian Presidency.

This proposal to impose a global tax on billionaires has been presented by Brazil within the framework of the G20, a forum chaired this year by the South American country.

The objective of this proposal, Lula explained, is to mobilize resources to “expand effective policies” to eradicate hunger and poverty that are being implemented in developing countries.

In this sense, he asked for the support of all those present at the G7 summit for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, which Brazil will formulate at the G20 summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro next November.

This global alliance “will be key to ending this scourge that still haunts humanity,” stressed the Brazilian president.

Brazil presented the proposal to tax large fortunes during G20 ministerial meetings at the beginning of the year, and so far it has received the support of some European countries, such as France.

Lula also defended the creation of international mechanisms for the regulation of artificial intelligence.

“We need international and intergovernmental governance of artificial intelligence, in which all States have a place,” Lula said in his speech at the summit.

The Brazilian president, who spoke in similar terms about AI this Thursday in Geneva during a meeting at the headquarters of the International Labor Organization (ILO), stated that “AI accentuates the scenario of opportunities, risks and asymmetries” between countries. rich and developing.

“We are interested in an AI (…) that also has the face of the Global South, that strengthens cultural and linguistic diversity and that develops the digital economy of our countries,” stressed the Brazilian president.

AI, according to its vision, must be “safe, transparent and emancipatory”, it must respect human rights, protect personal data and improve the capacity of States to adopt public policies in favor of the environment and contribute to the energy transition.

The day before, at the ILO, Lula said that AI “cannot be just for a few companies that have all our data without paying a cent.”
