Cuba will improve its science, technology and innovation system, focused on solving specific problems and promoting sectors such as nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, it emerged this Monday.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Eduardo Martínez and the Vice Minister, Armando Rodríguez, detailed that the country has a portfolio of more than six thousand 500 projects and the priorities of science and innovation must be focused on increasing foreign currency income. from exports of goods and services.

As well as increasing energy production, with emphasis on renewable sources and increasing food production.

In statements to the Cubadebate website, both representatives of the sector specified that the tasks for said improvement include increasing investment in science and innovation.

“The business system needs to invest more in science and innovation to develop, as well as local governments. On the other hand, we have to take more advantage of international cooperation and the negotiation of intangible assets that are created in the development of the projects themselves,” they argued.

They also said that it is necessary to identify all the scientific-technological results in the country that have not been applied and draw up a roadmap for their introduction.

Added to this is the promotion of Nanotechnology, New Biology and Artificial Intelligence, considered essential for the scientific development of a country.

“Emerging technologies and new knowledge constantly emerge that change paradigms. “We have identified these three key areas, among others, for the present and future development of Cuban science and we have the firm intention of carrying out the necessary actions to promote them from the point of view of human capital formation and infrastructure creation,” the experts asserted.

Another objective, they noted, will be to objectively measure the results of science and innovation and implement impact indicators.

“We want to determine the contribution of knowledge to the economy, perfect the calculation of the percentage of the Gross Domestic Product that is dedicated to science and innovation and we are close to concluding the project to calculate the Global Innovation Index, taking into account the characteristics typical of our country and the need to visualize Cuba’s innovative capacity,” they pointed out.

Cuba currently has 50 universities and 250 science, technology and innovation entities throughout the country.
